Thanks for the help. I suspect I got some sand in the lens because the lens wouldn't close and just say 'lens error' and 'retry power on'. i'd rather doing it my way. Canon Powershot Sd1000 Lens Error Restart Camera Its repeated several times and I'll see if the behavior continues this wkend.

Out of desperation and abandoned by Canon, I decided to fix the thing myself. However, judging by the comments this post continues to receive, the Canon SD1000 still has this issue, and... some sand came out, and the camera started working. They're relatively easy to reseat.
