What you described happened to me too when I had just one other USB device connected.I don't know if the ipod's faulty since a lot of people seem to be having Delayed Write Failed Network Share I hope this helps alleviate at least some of the frustration anyone in a similar bind has. If the problem appears after installing new memory, the memory in question may be faulty or not of the correct type for the motherboard in question. It appeared the ipod went through the restore process and we thought we could just sync in back up and start over, but it doesn't even register the ipod on itunes.
