More about the author I was truly ecstatic to hear the lens motor whirl and to see the lens barrel retract. That finally got the lens to move the way it was supposed to again. I have certainly never dropped it or abused it.I'm not wildly patient and after reading about the problem and its solution on several web sites I followed the most comprehensive advice fixed! At first the lens would retract when I turned it off, but tugging on it while turning it on, in effort to get it to fully extend and operate, only succeeded Then it shut off, and I couldn't even access the 'review' feature to see the photos I had just taken! and you should try solutions suggested in the other answers here, it may also happen that your camera has a manufacturing defect. The lens mechanism on compact cameras is one of the most vulnerable points, and it can get damaged even under normal use. I had a powershot do the same thing to me 2 years ago, so I got that out and tried the process out on that one too, but it didn't work
