It is now working fine. While makes one of the best DSLR's like Canon, Nikon is consistently rated the worst or near worst on a brand name point and shoot. It briefly registered a lens error message and then went blank again with the lens barrel extended. i'd rather doing it my way.

If the easy fixes didn't work, then the camera probably needs replacement of the entire lens assembly, which is no trivial task.
